We commonly get the question of when a helmet should be replaced, or how long will my helmet last. If you search for this information online, you will get a few different answers, but all similar.

Here at Product41 we always say, replace it every 5 years but the certification is good for 10 years, at times 10 + 1 years. Below outlines why we say this.

First, new SNELL helmet standards come out every 5 years. These new standards include and provide the newest technology in helmet safety standards. New manufacturing technology, material technology, and rigorous testing leads to these updated standards. Keep in mind, SNELL has many helmet standards ranging from equestrian to bicycling to snow sports and moto and auto racing. It's also important that when an organization states that a SNELL-certified helmet is required, you get the proper helmet for the sport. We see many people show up to an auto track day event with an M (motorcycle) certified helmet because the organizer states SNELL SNELL-rated or certified helmet is required. They are not all the same.

Note: It's important to check with your sanctioning body or organization, as their requirements for replacing or the current standard they require may vary.

When Should I Replace my Helmet?

  • Snell recommends replacing a helmet after five years of use, or immediately after any incident.
  • Signs of wear: Replace your helmet if you notice any signs of wear or damage.
  • Collisions: Replace your helmet if it's been worn during a collision or serious impact.
  • Material degradation: Even if a helmet is stored properly and doesn't show any visible signs of wear, the materials can degrade over time.
  • Daily use: Daily use can take a toll on a helmet, even if you treat it carefully.

The above statements are provided by Ronnie Swyers of Product41. With 38 years in the motorsports industry, these are just good "rules of thumb."
